Black Friday is a major retail holiday in the U.S., always falling on the day after Thanksgiving. These events are a big draw for holiday gift shopping, and big-ticket items like beds and electronics also see major discounts. Department stores, showrooms, discount stores, and online retailers all participate.
This year, Black Friday takes place on November 28th, with sales extending both the week before and after. Pre Black Friday sales are often seen all through November, while Cyber Monday sales last into the following week online.
When it comes to Black Friday mattress sales, you can expect to see a few consistent trends every year.
Some brands will offer percent or dollar discounts off regular prices. Others that don’t want to discount prices directly offer rebates or free-with-purchase offers, such as free boxsprings or pillows.
Gift cards have been popular in recent years, with several brands offering store or credit gift cards with purchases. Promotional doorbuster mattresses are also common, which are usually mid to low-quality beds offered in limited quantities at low prices.
In 2014, expect to see a large variety of sales, with a focus on the growing specialty hybrid and foam mattress categories. Online Black Friday deals are also increasing with major brands and department stores – meaning you may not even have to get out of your pajamas to save on better sleep!

Memory foam mattresses remain the most-liked mattress type in reviews, and continue gaining popularity as a category. Many major department stores and online brands have specials on memory foam beds this Black Friday.
The key things to compare with this mattress type include the density and type of memory foam, density of the core foam, and mattress covers.
Density is an important concept to understand when bed shopping. It refers to the weight of a cubic foot of foam. Low density memory foams are less prone to heat and odor, but higher densities are more durable and excel at pressure relief. In core layers, density relates to support and durability of the mattress. Cover fabrics impact breathability.

Innerspring Deals
Innerspring mattresses are the most popular, but ratings can be quite variable compared to memory foam. There is a wide range of spring mattresses to choose from during Black Friday sales, spanning cheap to luxury.
With spring beds, the key points of comparison include the type of coils, number of coils and gauge, and the quality of padding layers.
Bonnell, offset, continuous and pocketed coils all have different pros and cons. Bonnell and continuous coil beds tend to have lower prices, pocket and continuous coils excel at durability, while offset and pocket coils excel at support and motion isolation. Coil count is not everything, but very low coil counts can mean limited support and contouring. Gauge refers the thickness of springs, with lower gauges being stiffer but more durable. Quality of padding materials and foams will also play a role in the durability of the mattress.

Adjustable Bed Deals
Previous holiday sales in 2014 have seen offers on adjustable beds, which are becoming increasingly popular. These electric bases take the place of foundations and allow users to adjust the angle of the bed’s head and foot. Some also include luxury features like massage or other technologies.
When buying an adjustable bed, main points to compare include types of motors, range of motion, hand controls and functions, and added comfort/convenience features.
Motors can be AC or DC. AC is generally more powerful, while DC may be quieter. Be sure to pay attention to the base’s weight capacity, which is the maximum weight combined of the mattress and sleepers. Bases will also differ in the range of motion they offer, with those capable of a greater range offering more potential positions.
Controls can be hardwired to the bed or wireless, using radio frequency or WiFi. A few higher-end models also may have mobile apps for controls. Wall-hugger means a base stays close to the nightstand when adjusted, while leg heights can be important for use with furniture.
Convenience features can include different programs of massage, preset positions, memory buttons, safety features like battery backup, alarm or speaker functions and more.
